Sports briefs | Track sets 2 school records at Wichita St.

The girls 4×800 and 4×400 relays set school records at the Wichita State Shocker Pre-State Challenge.

Entries were split into 1-3A and 4-6A divisions, as well as an elite division, which were the top entries from all classes.

The 4×800 placed 1st in the 1-3A division. Grace Zeller, Adalynn Miller, Sophia Castillo, and Payton Wurtz ran a 10:25:10, beating the 22-year-old record of 10:32 set in 2002 (Barron, Burris, Loughary, Chamberlin). “The 4×800 had a better time than all of the 4-6A Division as well as a couple of schools in the Elite Division,” coach Roger Alderman said.

The 4×400 ran a time of 4:10:15, placing 3rd in the all-class elite division. The relay consisted of Grace Zeller, Alexus Ford, Talen Orton, and Payton Wurtz. The previous record stood at 4:16 set in 2016 by Schultz, Stuhlsatz, Michealis, and Hurla.

“The 4X400 was within 0.5 seconds of winning the Elite Division, placing 3rd. Overall we had 27 PR’s and Season Bests despite only being allowed 2 entries per event instead of the normal 3,” Alderman said.

Adding onto Payton Wurtzs’ accomplishments, she placed 3rd in the elite division for the 800. “It was really great to race against some of the best athletes in the state. Of course it’s a lot easier to put more pressure on yourself, but I think it’s good to get used to that kind of environment. I couldn’t be more proud of how our girls competed, and I can’t wait to see what else we can do. Like I said, we have something special this year,” Alderman said.

Freshman Grace Zeller, who was a part of both the 4×400 and 4×800 relays, also placed 1st in the 400 in the 1-3A division. Senior Sienna Jones placed 1st in the triple jump in the 1-3A division. The team competed at Jackson Heights Tuesday and heads to Rossville Friday.
