The Charger staff is reserve champion of the Kansas State Fair Scholastic Print Competiton.
The competition, which takes place each year at the Kansas State Fair, requires teams of five high school students to complete a 4-page newsletter in one day. The teams have from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. to interview, write, edit, photograph and design the newsletter. Two stories are assigned and the students come up with two others on their own.
The team of Kaytlyn Meseke, Hannah Mumpower, Laurel Barber, Emma Frey and Eleanor Badeker completed the competition before the deadline, writing stories about reenactors, artisans, magicians and a farm education program.
Wabaunsee placed 2nd out of 25 teams, finishing narrowly behind the champion Salina Central. In eight years competing in the event, WHS has won twice, finished second twice and third once.
The team did win one part of the competition: best Ag story. Junior Emma Frey’s story about Moo U finished in a 3-way tie for first, which was broken by judges.
Awards were also given for best photograph, best graphics and best lead story.
