WHS track qualified in nine events at the state track meet. At the end of the weekend, sophomore Payton Wurtz added four medals to her resume and the team earned its second-highest finish in school history at 7th place.
State Bound | Wrestling qualifies three for state tournaments
Three wrestlers have made the state tournament for the Chargers. Junior Alex Beggs qualified for the boys at 175. Juniors Sophia Castillo and Sienna Jones both made the state tournament in the girls first season as a team.

Girls wrestling is a new program to WHS, and it’s only existed in Kansas for a few years. Despite the local support and enthusiasm our team has enjoyed, there are some glaring differences in fairness between boys and girls at tournaments.
WHS stays in 2A classification
Wabaunsee stays classified as a 2A school for the 2022-2023 year. With 131 students, the Kansas State High School Activities Association, puts WHS along with 64 other schools from a range of 110 to 173 students, including St. Marys and Mission Valley.
Johnson wins regional wrestling title
The wrestling team competed at the regional tournament last weekend at Silver Lake. Only two kids were seeded, sophomores Alex Beggs and Weston Johnson. Johnson went 2-0 for the weekend, ending as the regional champion.

KSHSAA Advisory Team provides input from students
Each year six juniors across the state of Kansas are selected to be a part of the KSHSAA Student Advisory Team. Last year, I was one of the selected students and I currently serve as one of the 2A representatives. As a member of the team, part of my job is to provide input to the KSHSAA Executive Board, Board of Directors and Association staff about issues affecting students.

Schutter earns gold medal at state track
Junior Lauren Schutter needed all six attempts to achieve gold at Saturday’s state track meet in Wichita. Schutter, who medaled in the event as a freshman, took the lead on her second jump, 16’7.25”. It was good for a five-inch lead that looked like it might hold. But right before her sixth and final jump, two competitors pulled ahead. Horton’s Maliyah Soto jumped 16’9” and Syracuse’s Katelynn Riley jumped 16’8”, moving Schutter to third place.
