There are many WHS graduates who are doing great things. This week we highlight three college athletes from the class of 2022: Cade Oliver (Washburn), Kara Hafenstine (Ottawa) and Lauren Schutter (Michigan State).
Cade Oliver, a multi-sport standout, officially signed to play football at Washburn University in a ceremony Monday.
With success on his mind already, head coach Christian Ulsaker prepared well for his third season at Wabaunsee. “I’ve already watched every game from last year, and I’ve keyed in on our returning starters just to see what their strengths and weaknesses are,” Ulsaker said.
The Charger football season ended Friday evening with a 33-44 loss to Lyndon in regionals. Here is a by-the-numbers story of an incredible season.
The WHS football team had an explosive start to the playoffs Thursday evening, defeating the now 0-8 Northern Heights Wildcats 68-0.
Charger football ended an exceptional regular season last week with a dramatic 45-40 win over Centralia. “It was amazing. I knew that they were really good. When we took a knee to run out the clock it was a phenomenal feeling,” sophomore Zach Frank said.
Charger football secured its first winning season since 1997 with a 49-0 win over Horton Friday night. “It’s awesome. It’s incredibly fun and very exciting to see the kids get that accomplishment,” coach Jess Rutledge said.
2021 Homecoming candidates answer questions about their time at WHS. The homecoming parade begins Friday at 1:30 p.m. with the pep rally downtown after. The crowning is at 6:30 with football vs. Troy at 7 p.m. The homecoming dance begins after the game until 11 p.m.
Wabaunsee football is kicking off its season tonight with high expectations. Seniors Cade Oliver, Brayden Meseke, Caden Yonke, and Aiden Boeckman return a lot of experience to this squad, and plan to propel the team forward. “We are the leaders of the team; most of us have played for four years and know what we’ve got to do to be successful,” Meseke said. “It’s on us to hold the team and ourselves accountable.”
Boys basketball upset the number one substate seed Jefferson County North, 51-41 Thursday night. The win ended a 13 game win-streak for JCN, who entered the postseason 16-3.
“We knew JCN coming in was going to be a tough game,'' head coach Christian Ulsaker said. “Our guys came out ready to play against their zone and played phenomenal on defense.”
