Senior Lexi Barnes signed to play basketball at Peru State University in Peru, Nebraska in a celebration Wednesday at WHS.
Barnes plans to study Kinesiology and said she was attracted to the school’s small campus.
At her signing, head basketball coach Trevor Keller spoke about Barnes’ adjustment moving to WHS from Abilene for her senior year.
“It’s not easy adjusting to change at any phase of your life. But it’s especially true when that change occurs when you’re about to enter your senior year of high school. Lexi has appeared to make that transition seamlessly. That is because of her high character,” Keller said.
WHS counselor Wendy Leenerts spoke about her friendship with Barnes.
“I first met Lexi in August when she came to finalize her schedule at school. I was new and she was new. We hit it off very quickly. She was friendly and confident,” Leenerts said.
Barnes average 5 points and 4 rebounds per game for the Chargers. At the end of the season, Keller praised her work ethic. “Lexi is someone who, no matter what was asked of her, she never complained she just put her head down and worked.”
