Volleyball continues streak of postseason success

The Wabaunsee volleyball team is going to state for the fourth year in a row.

To start off sub-state, the girls took on St. Mary’s. There was a rough start with a loss in the first set. The team made a comeback, winning 23-25, 25-13, 26-24 to advance to the second round. “My head was about to explode the last point of the game. I missed my two serves previous to that and I was really scared that I was going to miss this one,” senior Sydney Holthaus said.

After a rocky start, Wabaunsee faced Valley Heights in the semifinals. It was their only easy victory of the day, winning 25-11, 25-12.

“We just played a lot better because we were a lot more relaxed and less nervous now that we were settled in,” senior Kara Hafenstine said.

The Chargers blew past the Mustangs in two sets taking them to the championship in a matchup against Herington. 

“It was really refreshing to beat Valley Heights by that much and it gave us a sense of confidence,” senior Kaelyn Conrad said.

After losing the first set, the girls turned things around and beat Herington becoming the sub-state champions, with a dramatic 24-26, 25-14, 27-25 win.“I was obviously elated and started crying immediately after the game was over. It was like a really big deal, my senior year to win sub-state on my mom’s birthday in the home court like that was the really cool experience,” senior Lauren Schutter said.

2A state takes place in Dodge City Friday and Saturday. The Chargers will take on Hillsboro, Smith Center and St. Marys Colgan in Pool 1.The Chargers will face Hillsboro on Friday at 3:30 for their first match. The top two teams from each pool will move on to the semifinals Saturday morning.
